Southern BIPOC Artist Fund Deadline Is Approaching!!!

7/9/2020

Comments

Picture
In response to the immense toll of the combined forces of COVID-19, recent racial unrest, and the intense economic instability currently facing many BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities, Burnaway will award ten grants of $500 ($5,000 total) to Black, Indigenous, and other artists of color in the South. You can contribute to this fund here.

BIPOC artists living and working in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia are eligible to apply for this grant. While all BIPOC artists in our coverage region are invited to apply, special consideration will be given to Black and Indigenous artists.

Applications are due by 11:59 pm EDT on Sunday, July 12. Grantees will be notified by Wednesday, July 15.
Picture
Eligibility
  • Applicants must have been living in AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, PR, TN, VA, or WV for at least six months.
  • Applicants must maintain an active art practice. Burnaway understands contemporary art to exist across a range of disciplines but will not prioritize applicants working in contexts more traditionally understood as performing arts (theater, music, dance), literary arts, or filmmaking.
  • Applicants must identify as BIPOC, defined as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. For this particular grant, priority will be given to Black and Indigenous artists, but all artists of color in the South are welcome to apply.
  • Grantees will be selected based on financial need and the potential impact of the grant in their lives and art practices.

Conversations about Jazz and Other Distractions with Carl Anthony – July 9 through December 24, 2020 – every other Thursday from 7:30-8:30 pm
Jazz is America’s classical music. Birthed in New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th century, jazz would become American's popular music and enjoyed by audiences all over the world.

Hammonds House Museum is thrilled to welcome former jazz radio host and founder of Notorious Jazz, Carl Anthony.  Carl will take Hammonds House Digital audiences on a unique journey through the music and include artist talks, workshops, listening sessions and other opportunities to engage in this music called jazz. A cool little set for the jazz novice and jazz head alike, this special series will take place digitally every other Thursday!
The events are free, but registration is required. To RSVP, click HERE.

Hammonds House Museum is generously supported by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, Fulton County Arts and Culture, the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, AT&T and WarnerMedia.
Hammonds House Museum’s mission is to celebrate and share the cultural diversity and important legacy of artists of African descent. The museum is the former residence of the late Dr. Otis Thrash Hammonds, a prominent Atlanta physician and a passionate arts patron. A 501(c)3 organization which opened in 1988, Hammonds House Museum boasts a permanent collection of more than 450 works including art by Romare Bearden, Robert S. Duncanson, Benny Andrews, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, Hale Woodruff, Amalia Amaki, Radcliffe Bailey and Kojo Griffin. In addition to featuring art from their collection, the museum offers new exhibitions, artist talks, workshops, concerts, poetry readings, arts education programs, and other cultural events throughout the year.

Located in a beautiful Victorian home in Atlanta’s historic West End, Hammonds House Museum is a cultural treasure and a unique venue. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they continue to observe CDC guidelines, but look forward to welcoming in-person visitors soon!  For more information about upcoming virtual events, and to see how you can support their mission, visit their website: hammondshouse.org.
