NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC TAKES POSSESSION OF SPACE AT FIFTH + BROADWAY
CEO and mayor sign historic lease document
The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) President and CEO H. Beecher Hicks III and Mayor David Briley signed lease that officially gives the museum control over the space the museum will occupy at Fifth and Broadway.
The lease document solidifies the agreement between the museum and the city of Nashville  for NMAAM to occupy the 56,000-square-foot space

within the Fifth + Broadway development.  Now that the lease has been signed, the exhibit build-out can begin with the expectation of
opening in the summer of 2020.
“I’d like to thank Mayor Briley for his continued support of the museum throughout the fundraising and construction process,” Hicks said. “This is an important moment for our museum and this city, when we take the next step in fulfilling a musical legacy that began centuries ago. Today marks the day the long-held dream of NMAAM begins to become a reality, and now we can begin to build what will be a jewel in the crown for Music City. The work starts today.”

“With this lease, Nashville demonstrates its commitment to this museum and lets the world know
that, when we say ‘Music City,’ we mean all kinds of music,” Briley said. “NMAAM will be an
incredible attraction and will tell the important story of African American music in our city and
beyond. This is the culmination of years of organization, hard work and planning from city and
business leaders alike. I’m honored to have played a role in helping make this a reality for our
city, and I can’t wait for all Nashvillians to experience it.”
About the National Museum of African American Music
The National Museum of African American Music, set to open in the summer of 2020, will be
the only museum dedicated solely to preserving African American music traditions and
celebrating the influence African Americans have had on music. Based in Nashville, Tenn., the
museum will share the story of the American soundtrack by integrating history and interactive
technology to bring musical heroes of the past into the present. For more information, please

As they continue their 40th Anniversary Celebration this fall, Fulton County Arts & Culture is presenting a fabulous photography collection and inviting Fulton County families to pose for their very own portraits. From October 30 through November 14, visitors to the Southwest Arts Center Gallery will enjoy an exhibition of striking photos by renowned photographer Thomas Dorsey entitled Family: Pride, Dignity and Togetherness featuring notable Atlanta families including those of Andrew Young, Hank Aaron, Ed Spriggs and Marvin Arrington, Sr. In association with the Dorsey exhibition, during October and November, families from Fulton County can participate in Fulton Families Photo Days at six events across the county. Admission is free for the Dorsey exhibition and the photos events.
“We believe the arts are essential to the social, spiritual, and intellectual health of our communities,” states Lionell Thomas, Director of Fulton County Arts & Culture.  “We’re honoring the legacy of renowned family portrait photographer Thomas Dorsey with an exhibition of his work, and we are celebrating the beauty and diversity of our own Fulton County family by inviting residents to have their portrait taken. We hope they enjoy the art and come celebrate with us!”

Thomas Dorsey exhibition Family: Pride, Dignity and Togetherness

There will be an Opening Reception on Wednesday, October 30 from 6-9 pm, and the exhibition will be on view through November 14 at the gallery at Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Road SW, Atlanta, GA 30331. The gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission to the exhibition is free.

Thomas Dorsey was born in Augusta, GA, but grew up in Chicago, IL. After a four-year stint in the Air Force, he worked at the Post Office for a decade. Then he became interested in art and pursued a degree in Fine Art from the Art Institute of Chicago. He fell in love with photography which led him to start a business with his wife centered on family portraiture. During the next 32 years he made a name for himself beginning in Chicago, and then in Atlanta, by taking photos of families in their homes. The Family: Pride, Dignity and Togetherness exhibition showcases selected photos of prominent African American families from Fulton County and Chicago taken between 1978 and 2002.
“I cannot say how one should view these images, but the title reflects the positive potential of the human spirit I saw every time I was given the opportunity to trip the shutter!” - Thomas Dorsey

ARTS AND CRAFTS

Vendors offer everything from paintings and photographs, wood crafts, pottery and glassware, furniture, floral arrangements and decorative accessories, baskets, adult and children’s clothing, doll clothes and toys, jewelry, candles, soap and more. All items must be handmade or hand-decorated; no commercial products are allowed.
Several of the same Arts & Crafts vendors return to the Festival year after year; When possible, returning vendors are located in the same general area. Most vendors are local or from the southeast. However, with our growing reputation as one of the best festivals in the southeast, we are fortunate enough attract vendors from as far away as Texas and Ohio.

FOOD

The Duluth Fall Festival has more than 50 booths offering a variety of food and refreshments for breakfast, lunch and dinner. From coffee, lemonade, cream soda, and slushes to breakfast biscuits, kettle corn, hamburgers, hotdogs, gyros, and alligator, there is something to please every palate. And it wouldn’t be complete without sweets, such as snow cones, funnel cakes and candy apples.
The Food Vendor committee works hard to ensure that there is a variety of fare to choose from, with as little duplication as possible.
