In response to the immense toll of the combined forces of COVID-19, recent racial unrest, and the intense economic instability currently facing many BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities, Burnaway will award ten grants of $500 ($5,000 total) to Black, Indigenous, and other artists of color in the South. You can contribute to this fund here.

BIPOC artists living and working in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia are eligible to apply for this grant. While all BIPOC artists in our coverage region are invited to apply, special consideration will be given to Black and Indigenous artists.

Applications are due by 11:59 pm EDT on Sunday, July 12. Grantees will be notified by Wednesday, July 15.

Eligibility
  • Applicants must have been living in AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, PR, TN, VA, or WV for at least six months.
  • Applicants must maintain an active art practice. Burnaway understands contemporary art to exist across a range of disciplines but will not prioritize applicants working in contexts more traditionally understood as performing arts (theater, music, dance), literary arts, or filmmaking.
  • Applicants must identify as BIPOC, defined as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. For this particular grant, priority will be given to Black and Indigenous artists, but all artists of color in the South are welcome to apply.
  • Grantees will be selected based on financial need and the potential impact of the grant in their lives and art practices.

TV One's award-winning documentary series UNSUNG shines a spotlight on legendary rap group Goodie Mob on Sunday, April 19 at 10 p.m. ET/9C.
Atlanta hip hop quartet Goodie Mob changed the rap game in the mid-90s. With distinctive flows backed by dope beats, they helped create a new lane for Southern rappers in a time when New York and LA dominated hip hop. Instead of boasting about what they had or what they did in the streets, the group focused its lyrics on messages of inspiration and social justice. With multiple gold albums and irresistible hits, like “Dirty South”, “Black Ice”, and “Cell Therapy”, Goodie Mob cemented their place in hip hop. When group member CeeLo left to pursue a solo career and found huge success, it threatened to end the group for good.  In this episode of Unsung, all four members of Goodie Mob, along with friends and family, including Big Boi, T.I., and Killer Mike, come together to tell their story.
For more information on UNSUNG visit TV One's YouTube Channel and check out exclusive, behind-the-scenes content on www.tvone.tv.
Viewers can also join the conversation by connecting via social media on TV One's Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (@tvonetv) and the UNSUNG Facebook (@tvoneunsung) using the hashtag #UNSUNG.

One Jail.  One Recording Studio.- 16 Bars

1/20/2020

Comments

Picture
16 BARS is a feature length music documentary that offers a rare glimpse at the human stories — and songs — that are locked away in our nation’s jails and prisons. The film follows a unique rehabilitation effort in the Richmond City Justice Center that invites inmates to write and record original music. In the jail’s makeshift recording studio, 4 men collaborate on an album with a Grammy-winning recording artist, Todd “Speech” Thomas, from the iconic activist hip-hop group Arrested Development. As the creative process unfurls, each of these men must unearth painful memories from the past, which hold a key to a new chapter in their lives.
"THESE MEN ARE BEHIND BARS... BUT THEIR VOICES HAVE TO BE HEARD."
- SPEECH (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT)
The film is set in Richmond Virginia, the former seat of the confederacy, where the legacy of systemic racism, a spiraling opioid crisis, generational poverty, and a lack of mental health services have entrapped many of its citizens in a cycle of incarceration, making the city itself a unique case study for rising recidivism rates in the U.S. at large. With the U.S. locking up more of its citizens per capita than any other nation on the planet, the music of the film serves as rare testimony to the raw and messy truth behind the criminal justice system’s revolving door.
