America’s Marathon Weekend Wraps with 13,000 on the Run at Publix Atlanta Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K

A day after Atlanta hosted the finest marathoners in the country at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon, runners filled the streets of this city once again as more than 13,000 participated in the Publix Atlanta Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K. Wrapping up a celebration billed as America’s Marathon Weekend, the race attracted runners from across the country on a running tour of Atlanta on a picture-perfect day.
Picture

Five of the six men and women who finished on the Trials podium – the first six runners on Team USA – acted as official starters for the race on Sunday morning, with women’s champion Aliphine Tuliamuk, Molly Seidel, Sally Kipyego, Abdi Abdirahman, and Jake Riley shouting words of encouragement to the runners on Marietta Street as the sun rose over Atlanta.
Picture
From there, the races wound through Atlanta, with participants ultimately crossing the same finish line that saw Olympians crowned just one day before.
Benjamin Kopecky, of St. Louis, Missouri, won the men’s marathon in a time of 2:29:49. Kopecky opened up a sizable gap and won the race by nearly five minutes on the course that traveled through Edgewood, Martin Luther King National Historic Park, Piedmont Park, Grant Park, the Atlanta University Center, and underneath the Olympic Rings and Cauldron structure from the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
“It’s a notoriously difficult course and I love running hills,” Kopecky said. “I’m actually trying to complete marathons in 50 states and so today was state number 33. It was a fantastic weekend overall, and I don’t think we could have asked for anything better.”
In the women’s race, Abigail Cember from Philadelphia, PA, ran 3:00 on the dot to take the victory. She led from start to finish, hanging on over the hills at the end of the course to keep the win in hand.
“The atmosphere was awesome,” Cember, in town to support her Philadelphia Runner Track Club teammates in the Trials, said after her race. “Atlanta has had so many friendly vibes. I was leading for most of the race so I heard a lot of people screaming out ‘girl power!’”
Picture
In keeping with the Olympic theme of the weekend, 2016 Zimbabwean Olympian Pardon Ndhlovu won the half marathon in a blistering time of 1:07:17 – more than five minutes faster than last year’s winning time on the same course.
On the women’s side, Nina Zarina of Arlington, Virginia and originally from Moscow, blazed her own speedy time, running a 1:16:14 to take the victory.
“I was worried that Atlanta would be very hilly,” Zarina said. “But it was like a running party here. It was wonderful because I had inspiration from before from watching the Trials and then I had a chance to run in the same city and put into action your inspiration.”
The half marathon featured three other notable Olympic legends crossing the finish line as well.
Four-time Olympian Meb Keflezighi was the first of those, as he spent the morning pacing the 1:40 half marathon group to a time of 1:39:37. The former Olympic marathoner noted that in previous years he would have found himself running the tangents at the Trials the day before, but this year was excited to “give high fives and keep them going to their goal.”
The next Olympian across the line was three-time Olympic gold medalist Gail Devers, who raced her first-ever half marathon and ran a 1:53:54. Known previously for her sprinting and hurdling prowess, Devers trained with the Club’s In-Training program and pushed herself to an 8:41 average mile this morning. She had company from another 1996 Olympian – shot putter John Godina, who finished in 2:02:03. The two-time Olympic medalist ran his first half marathon in his return to the city that saw him win silver in 1996.

The first race of the morning was won by Craig Lutz, a two-time NCAA All-American in the 10K for the University of Texas who was in Atlanta to watch the Trials. The 27-year-old blazed a 15:09 to take the win over Nicholas Turco from Boulder, CO. On the women’s side, Ellyn Atkinson ran a 17:52 to take the victory in a tight race over Jacquelyn Abanses, who was six seconds behind.
As the day came to a close, so too did America’s Marathon Weekend, which began on Thursday with the America’s Marathon Weekend Experience, saw more than 600 children cross the Trials finish line at the Publix Atlanta Kids Marathon, crowned six Olympians, and then celebrated distance running in all of Atlanta. The weekend, which allowed Atlanta Track Club to intertwine elite racing and citizen distance running, brought tens of thousands to downtown Atlanta over the course of three days.
“America’s Marathon Weekend was created to bring together every member of the running community in a way that has never been done before, said Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Rich Kenah. “As the final finisher of the Publix Atlanta Marathon crosses the finish line, we’re excited to see the impact of this weekend on Running City USA and on this city’s Olympic future.”
Registration is already open for next year’s Publix Atlanta Marathon Weekend, which will take place on February 27 and 28, 2021.

Voting opens today for the annual AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt Contest in which five Atlanta-area graphic designers are vying to have their artwork featured on the coveted AJC Peachtree Road Race Finisher’s Shirt.
Throughout March, everyone is invited to AJC.com/peachtree and vote for their favorite design. The winner will be revealed at the 51st Running of the world’s largest 10K on Saturday, July 4, 2020.
Artists were encouraged to incorporate the theme of this year’s race: Move Forward with Atlanta.
“We are excited to kick off the next 50 years of the AJC Peachtree Road Race,” said Rich Kenah, Race Director of the AJC Peachtree Road Race. “But a new chapter for this race can’t begin without its most sacred tradition, the AJC Peachtree Road Race T-Shirt Contest.”
“The AJC Peachtree Road Race is so much more than just a 10k – it represents an important moment of community pride and one of the things that truly define Atlanta,” said AJC Marketing Vice President Amy Chown. “The t-shirt is something all wear with pride since the only way to get one is to cross the finish line”.
Nearly 200 designs were entered into this year’s contest. The finalists were chosen by staff members from Atlanta Track Club and the Atlanta Journal Constitution, as well as select participants of the Peachtree. The winning design is a closely guarded secret until the moment the first finisher crosses the line on the Fourth of July. The surprised winning designer receives $1,000 from the AJC and has their name forever written in the Peachtree history books.
Voting is open through March 31 and anyone may vote once per day. Registration to participate in the AJC Peachtree Road Race opens March 15 and closes on March 31. Atlanta Track Club members receive guaranteed entry into the race. All others must enter into a lottery.

Voting is now open at ajc.com/peachtree.

Bartlett and Krifchin Join Atlanta Track Club Elite
Georgia Tech Grad and Marathon Veteran Aiming for Career-Year in 2020
Picture
As the Olympic year approaches, Atlanta Track Club Elite announced Friday that it has added a middle distance star and a marathon standout to its team of Olympic hopeful athletes.
Recent Georgia Tech graduate Avery Bartlett will begin his professional career in Atlanta starting with the 2020 indoor track and field season. Bartlett is the 2018 ACC Champion in the 800m. He holds the second fastest 800m and 1500m times in school history. His 1:47.54 set in 2019 trails only Atlanta Track Club Elite teammate Brandon Lasater (1:47.38, 2015) on the Yellow Jacket all-time list.
Bartlett was born in Atlanta but grew up in Tallahassee, Florida. He returned to Atlanta to study at Georgia Tech, the school from which both his parents, his grandfather and great grandfather all graduated.
“This city has always meant a lot to me. I see putting on an Atlanta Track Club singlet as my way to fully contribute to the city's success,” said Bartlett. “Atlanta Track Club gives me the opportunity to train with some of the best and put my limits to the test.”
Picture
Bartlett joins a talented group of middle distance men in Atlanta which includes Lasater and Abraham Alvarado, the 1,000m runner up at the 2019 USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships.
With just 11 weeks until Atlanta hosts the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon, veteran marathon star Maegan Krifchin has returned to Atlanta to train with Atlanta Track Club Elite. Krifchin, who placed 7th in the 2016 Trials, comes to Atlanta after training in Washington D.C. She previously ran with the Club in 2017. The Long Island, New York native and Syracuse University alum holds a personal best of 2:32:47 in the marathon and 1:09:51 in the half marathon.
“I came to Atlanta Track Club to be part of a community where I can support others and they can support me,” said Krifchin. “I thrive in this kind of environment and I am excited to see what we can do together.”

Krifchin is one of eight Atlanta Track Club athletes qualified for the Trials which will be held on February 29. Bridget Belyeu, Laurie Knowles, Lacey Krout, Morgan VanGorder, Wilkerson Given and Matt McDonald are also qualified for the race.
“Avery and Maegan each bring new talent, experience and personality to Atlanta Track Club Elite,” said Coach Amy Begley. “We look forward to seeing Avery compete with the nation’s best this season and to have Maegan join the hometown team competing for a spot in Tokyo.”
Founded in 2015, Atlanta Track Club Elite is sponsored by Mizuno USA and coached by Amy and Andrew Begley.

Event Records Fall as AJC Peachtree Road Race Celebrates 50th Running

Historic day in Atlanta as elites, legends, and 60,000 participate in world’s largest 10K
Picture
ATLANTA – July 4, 2019 – The 50th Running of the AJC Peachtree Road Race re-wrote the event’s history books with four brand new event records and the fastest 10K ever run on U.S. soil. Behind the greatest athletes in the world, 60,000 participants streamed across the line at Piedmont Park, sweaty and smiling and celebrating half a century of Atlanta’s Fourth of July tradition.
$200,000 in event record bonus prize money was up for grabs and today’s winners took it all with the men’s and women’ winners in both the footrace and the Shepherd Center Wheelchair division setting all-time bests at the Peachtree.
In the women’s footrace, Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei outlasted Agnes Tirop and Fancy Chemutai in an epic sprint to the finish, crossing the line in 30:21 to break the previously-held record of 30:32.
“I want to say thank you to the people who were cheering us all the way,” Kosgei said. “They say ‘try, try, try’ and I was so happy for these people. I hope to come again next year to make a record again.”

The men’s footrace featured Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto chasing perhaps the most untouchable record of all – 27:04, set by compatriot Joseph Kimani in 1996. That time was not only the event record but the fastest 10K ever run in the United States. Until now. Kirputo, the 19-year-old phenom, delivered in spades, running alone for nearly the entire race and covering the course from Lenox Square to the park in 27:01.

“I am happy for the win today,” said Kipruto. “When I was coming here I was coming for a course record and I thank God for that.”
Both records also went down in the Shepherd Center wheelchair divisions. The women’s wheelchair race was another battle to the finish, as Switzerland’s Manuela Schar crossed just ahead of Tatyana McFadden and Susannah Scaroni to take the women’s title in 21:28 – 31 seconds ahead of the previous record of 22:09.
On the men’s side, Daniel Romanchuk completed his three-peat at the Peachtree and took the event record that narrowly evaded him last year. He crossed the line in 18:11, shattering the previously-held event record of 18:38.

“It’s amazing,” Schar said. “I was just happy to win it because it was such a tough race. To get that bonus is just huge.”
“It still hasn’t entirely sunk in yet,” Romanchuk said. “It was a fast day and a great field. I was just sprinting all the way to go as fast as I could – It was a very strong record so I knew it had to be an all-out record. To have an equal payout for the record bonus, I’m lacking the words to describe it.”

The $50,000 bonus is the largest single payday in the history of elite wheelchair racing.
Emily Sisson (Scottsdale, AZ) and Colin Bennie (Charlottesville, VA), were the top American finishers, running 32:03 and 29:12, respectively.
Atlanta Track Club’s Wilkerson Given and Janel Blancett went home with the Top Georgian honors, as Given crossed in 30:12 and Blancett finished in 36:03.

About an hour after the dramatics of the elite races came to a finish, notable Atlantans from across the years began to make their way across the 10th St. finish line. First, author Emily Giffin was revealed as the winner of the Peachtree’s T-shirt contest, with her design, titled “Lucky Bib,” unveiled as the chosen design to the race’s 60,000 participants. Created in collaboration with Atlanta Track Club member Tina Tait, the design was part of a special competition ahead of this year’s race, with submissions curated by notable Atlantans and Atlanta institutions.
“Honestly, that was the highlight of my life,” said Giffin, an Atlanta Track Club member who ran the race with her daughter, Harriet, while her sons and husband raced ahead. “It’s more than winning a contest – It’s the fact that this is my family’s passion. The Atlanta Track Club means so much to us and so it’s symbolic of what we do as a family.”

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms at the 50th AJC Peachtree Road Race
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms served as an official starter at Lenox Square, as she kicked off the race then walked the course with her staff for the second straight year.
“I was born in 1970, so to think that this race started seven months after I was born and that now I get to kick it off as Mayor it really is a dream come true for me and speaks to what’s possible in our city,” she said. “The Peachtree just speaks to Atlanta and the diversity that we have in this city. I’m grateful to Atlanta Track Club, our sanitation workers, our public safety personnel, and the Department of Public Works for making this race beautiful and clean and safe for all of us.”
For the 50th straight July 4, Bill Thorn crossed the Peachtree’s finish line, as he continued his streak as the only member of the Original 110 finishers to complete every edition of the race. Walking alongside his friends, family, and former Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Julia Emmons, Thorn was ecstatic to have finished the Peachtree yet again.
“It could’ve been just a fad,” said Thorn of his early Peachtree streak. “But as you go along through the years, people like Julia say to me every once in a while to keep going and that was really encouraging, and so it just became a year after year thing. Who ever would have imagined that little tiny group would have turned into this?”
“Atlanta Track Club, its members and volunteers wanted to make the 50th Running of the Peachtree into an unforgettable celebration of the history and legacy of this race,” said Rich Kenah, Race Director of the AJC Peachtree Road Race and Executive Director of Atlanta Track Club. “And Running City USA delivered.  This is a day that Atlanta will remember for years to come.”
